One of the most important decisions when deciding to upgrade a roof is deciding on which material to choose. Investing in a new roof can be a costly exercise and it’s important to understand the benefits and differences between common roofing materials and select the best fit for your particular project or renovation. You should also consider your budget, the area you live and the weather conditions that the roof will endure. Often a steel roof can last at least two decades of soaring heat before showing signs of deterioration.
Australian architectural styles are well suited to steel roofs and they have become a very popular choice for residential architects and home renovators.
The most common roofing materials for residential roofs are Colourbond and Zincalume. Both of these products are trademarked by steel manufactures as being durable products that have been tested to withstand corrosion as well as being designed to protect against other natural occurrences like termites and other infestations.
Colourbond steel is a corrugated steel roofing material that is pre-painted. It is designed to be durable and long lasting with a sealed pre-painted finish that has a Zincalume core which retains the colour over time. Whilst looking attractive and being available in a range of colours, Colourbond roofs also offer a level of thermal efficiency depending on the colour chosen.
Advantages:
o Available in a wide range of colours to suit virtually any aesthetic
o Popular choice for commercial roofing projects
o More thermally efficient that other projects
Disadvantages
o Relatively expensive when compared to other steel products
Made from aluminium, zinc and silicon Zincalume steel is a very durable material. It will outlast galvanized steel and will often last more than four times as long. Zincalume is a fantastic solution for most residential builds, it is also cheaper than other most other roofing materials, plus there is the benefit of a low environmental impact due to its longevity.
Advantages:
o Low cost
o Long lasting
o Tough material and resistant to scratches during installation
o Eco Friendly and recyclable when it comes time to replace
Disadvantages:
o Shiny aluminium colour which will become dull over time
Both Colourbond and Zincalume are quality building materials and suitable for a number of applications. When selecting a material, it’s important to consider budget, the aesthetic and preferred finish as well as the time before replacement. It’s also important to consider the elements and the typical weather that the roof will be exposed to.
